‘Inflation has hit daily wage workers most’

Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI: Stating that the staggering increase in the prices of foodgrains and other daily necessities was making life difficult for the common man, Janata Dal (United) president Sharad Yadav on Friday said the anti-poor and anti-farmer policies of the United Progressive Alliance Government were solely responsible for the current surge of inflation.

Addressing a rally at Jantar Mantar here, Mr. Yadav said: “Today is a black day as the prices have never seen such an unprecedented increase in the past 60 years. As a result of the Government’s pro-rich policies, farmers are committing suicide and youngsters from Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Maharashtra who have completed their studies in their mother-tongues are struggling to get jobs. The worst-hit are the daily wage workers who are finding it difficult to earn their livelihood.”

Forced to sell land

Pointing out that inflation had touched 8.1 per cent making the price of edibles and other consumer items unaffordable, the JD (U) leader said it was a pity that farmers were forced to sell their rich agricultural land at very low prices to the Government which was selling them at astronomical rates to MNCs.
