The special drive in two ranges against absconders has paid off, says R. Rajaram Concerted efforts by the law enforcing authorities to execute non-bailable warrants that were pending against absconding accused for long has resulted in the arrest of over 7,000 persons across the Central Zone over the past few months. Several absconding accused involved in grave crimes and against whom NBWs were pending were also apprehended in the special drive conducted both in Tiruchi and Thanjavur ranges. The thrust to execute the NBWs s was one among the key strategies of the law enforcing authorities to check the activities of criminals and prevent further crimes. Special teams headed by an officer and select men were formed at every police station falling within the zone comprising Tiruchi Rural, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Pudukottai, Karur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur and Nagapattinam districts and entrusted with the task of executing the pending NBWs and apprehending the absconding accused. Top priority was accorded to old NBWs and those that were pending against ‘priority criminals’ involved in grave law and order and crime cases, say police authorities. The police went after hired killers, those involved in murder, attempt to murder, hurt cases and those anti-social elements involved in repeated offences. The police personnel even went to Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Bangalore to arrest the accused, says a senior police officer. The drive resulted in the arrest of over 1,000 absconding persons each in Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Karur, Thanjavur districts. About 10 to 15 per cent of them were old warrants, say the authorities. Ever since the drive commenced, murders involving hired killers had stopped, claim the police authorities. Efforts were still on to execute the around 1,000 NBWs which were still pending across the Zone, the authorities said.
