Cases against Congress MLA, activists

Staff Reporter

In connection with a clash between two party factions in Coimbatore

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Police have registered three cases against Congress activists, including Valparai MLA Kovai Thangam, in connection with a clash between two party factions at a workers’ meeting at a marriage hall in the Ramanathapuram area on Thursday night.

Trouble erupted when Mr. Thangam, along with his supporters, tried to enter the hall. This was resisted by the other group. This led to heated exchanges and fisticuffs. A section of the activists broke tubelights and pushed down two-wheelers. As the situation turned tense, police reinforcements separated the groups and chased away those indulging in violence.

On Friday, Mr. Thangam said he had presented a memorandum to the City Police Commissioner seeking action against police personnel who “acted in a biased and partisan manner.”

On Friday, the police registered a case against “known but unidentified activists,” under section 353 (preventing a public servant from discharging his duty) and 332 (causing hurt to deter a public servant from discharging his duty) of the Indian Penal Code. This was in connection with the injuries to Jagadeesh, a police constable attached to the Tamil Nadu Special Police Battalion.

Based on a complaint from Congress district secretary, A.R. Chinnaiyan, the police have registered a case against Mr. Thangam, Mayura Jayakumar, Kulfi Thangaraj, C.R. Ravichandran, Dinesh, Pon Anandakumar and others under sections 147 (Unlawful assembly), 148 (Unlawful assembly with deadly weapons), 323 (causing hurt), 472 (mischief causing damage) and 506 (ii) for criminal intimidation under the Indian Penal Code. Based on a complaint from a congress activist Karthikeyan, the police have also registered a case against Congress district secretary Chinnayan, Thirumugam and others.
