Drive against illicit distillation intensified
Staff Reporter
MADURAI: The Enforcement Wing of Tamil Nadu police has intensified the drive against illicit distillation in the wake of the recent tragedy in Hosur and Karnataka, said Additional Director-General of Police (Prohibition Enforcement) K.R. Shyamsundar here on Friday.
He told a press conference that illicit brewing should be tackled through a joint effort by roping in various sections of society, including non-governmental and voluntary organisations and teachers, along with the government machinery.
Mr. Shyamsundar said against the usual registration of 300 to 325 cases a day, the department had registered more than 500 cases against prohibition offenders in the past few days in the State.
Referring to cases registered in Madurai region in 2007, the ADGP said that the department had registered 309 cases and arrested 315 persons, including 10 women. In 2008, between January and May, 158 cases were registered and 168 persons, including 10 women, arrested. During the last seven days, 33 cases were registered and 39 persons arrested in the city.
At the State-level, the police arrested 497 persons under the Goondas Act in 2007 and 230 between January and April this year, besides identifying around 200 people to be booked under the Act for their involvement in illicit distillation and sale.
The police, he said, had seized 138 vehicles, including 104 motorcycles and four autos, used to transport illicit liquor.
Vigil at check posts had been stepped up.
