Fiat to RTOs on speed governors
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: Following the oral direction from the High Court on Thursday, the Transport Commissioner on Friday directed the Regional Transport Officers (RTOs) in the State to register new transport vehicles only if they are fitted with speed governors.
Commissioner M. Lakshminarayana, who was on election duty in Warangal in Andhra Pradesh, returned to the city on Friday and held a meeting of senior officials. Later, he issued the order, according to sources in the department.
“We will enforce the speed governor rule on new vehicles,” Mr. Lakshminarayana told The Hindu.
Reiterating the strike threat, president of the Karnataka State Lorry Owners and Agents’ Federation G.R. Shanmugappa on Friday alleged that a senior official of the Transport Department, who will retire on May 31, was hell-bent on implementing the rule. He alleged that there was a nexus between the department officials and manufacturers of speed governors, as installation of the device involved transaction to the tune of hundreds of crores of rupees.
