Teachers’ training college to get a facelift

The Government College of Teacher Education, Kozhikode, a premier institution of teacher training in Malabar is being spruced up.

A sum of Rs.42 lakh is being spent to provide a facelift to the old college building complex overlooking the Mananchira tank in the heart of the city.

The Government Training College as it is known then first started functioning on the campus of the Victoria College, Palakkad, in 1950. The institution was shifted to its present campus in Kozhikode in 1951 and was accorded recognition by the Kerala University in 1957 and affiliated to the Calicut University in 1968-69.

The college was provided the nomenclature Government College of Teacher Education as per the directive of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development in 1992.

With a large number of girl students from all over the State seeking admission here of late, a major problem confronting the college authorities was the non-availability of a women’s hostel building on the campus.

The hostel building was now occupied by the Deputy Directorate of Collegiate Education and repeated demands by students, parents and the college authorities for vacating the premises fell on deaf ears.

Despite an order of the District Collector, the directorate continued to function here.

The college has modern laboratories, state-of-art computer facilities, literary, music and health clubs and associations for subjects offered such as Arabic, English, Hindi, Malayalam, mathematics, natural science, physical science, Sanskrit and social science.

The library has a collection of 16,000 books besides a pedagogic park.

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council will be visiting the college from June 9 to 11 to review the activities for providing accreditation.

The Kozhikode Corporation Council had in a resolution appealed to the authorities concerned to start post-graduate course at the college.

The starting of M.Ed. course in the college has been a long-term demand of the Parent-Teacher Association too.
