Schools likely to hike tuition fee

Sangeeth Kurian

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Feeling the pinch of inflation, several city schools are gearing up for a revision in tuition fee and rates of other school-related paraphernalia from the coming academic year.

While the percentage of increase in tuition fees in most schools is yet to be finalised, members of Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) expect the rise to be marginal.

Take, for instance, the Bishop Pereira Memorial School at Thonnakkal where the proposed hike is expected to be around 10 to 15 per cent. The school is likely to increase its monthly fee by Rs.25. But the amount will be finalised only after an executive committee meeting comprising teachers, parents and the school authorities, Sankaran Nair, president of the PTA, said.

Similarly, at Navajeevan Bethany Vidyalaya, Nalanchira, parents have been asked to expect an increase of Rs.50 to Rs.100 in fees from June.

Sree Vivekananda Memorial Public School, Neyyattinkara, meanwhile, has decided to increase the rate of transportation, instead of focussing on tuition fees. Transportation by the school bus will cost the students 20 to 25 per cent more than the previous academic year.

“We haven’t revised our transportation rates for the past two years despite an increase in fuel prices,” Jayasankar Prasad, Principal, said.

Most parents appear to have acknowledged the ‘ground realities’ that prompt schools to go for a price hike and are instead placing their money on the quality of education imparted to the children by the schools.
