Issue of photo ID cards begins

KARAIKAL: Nearly 1,500 poor agricultural and other casual workers belonging to four villages of Poovam, Melakasakudy, Sorakudi and Sethur in Karaikal district in the Union Territory of Puducherry, were issued photo identity cards by N. Vasanthakumar, Karaikal Collector, here on Wednesday.

The Collector said that poor agricultural and other workers in rural areas would be given job under the National Rural Employment Guarantee (NREG) scheme and provided daily wages, according to the work.

He pointed out that the photo identity cards were a must for getting the job under the scheme.

Dr. Vasanthakumar said that several rural development works would be taken up under the NREG from June 2 in Karaikal district and poor agricultural and other casual workers from rural areas given employment in desilting irrigation channels, creating ponds, forming new mud roads, etc.
