New Delhi: A Delhi court has issued fresh production warrant against underworld don gangster Abu Salem after Mumbai Police failed to produce him before it in a MCOCA case registered in connection with his bid to extort Rs.5 crore from a city businessman. Additional Sessions Judge Ravinder Kaur ordered the Arthur Jail authorities at Mumbai to ensure Salem’s presence on July 5. Meanwhile, the hearing on the Delhi Government plea for dropping MCOCA charges against the don could not take place as the matter is pending before the Delhi High Court. Earlier, Additional Solicitor General Vikas Singh had sought dropping of charges against extradited gangster Salem under MCOCA saying that he, as per the terms of the extradition, could not be slapped with fresh cases. The extortion case was not referred to in the extradition terms, mutually decided between Indian and Portuguese authorities, the ASG had said. The Delhi Government in its application under Section 321 of the CrPC sought withdrawal of provisions of the MCOCA invoked against Salem in a supplementary charge-sheet. Salem is facing MCOCA charges in connection with an extortion call made to a city-based businessman Ashok Gupta in 2002, demanding Rs.5 crore as protection money. He was extradited from Portugal in 2005 in three cases related to CBI probe in the Mumbai blasts , passport cases of Lucknow and Hyderabad and three extortion cases. The don’s extradition was also sought over a conspiracy to murder case in Delhi and the Pradip Jain and Ajit Dewani murder cases in Mumbai. - PTI
