Demolition of huts of the poor opposed

Staff Reporter

KARUR: Cadres belonging to the AIADMK staged a demonstration in front of the Taluk Office here on Friday, decrying the demolition of hutments and dwelling units of poor and downtrodden in the wake of Erattai Vaikkal renovation works in Karur and seeking proper rehabilitation for them.

Former Chief Minister and party leader Jayalalithaa had announced that the AIADMK would highlight the plight of the displaced by organising the demonstration.

In consonance with her announcement, the AIADMK party cadres led by the State Organising Secretary P.H. Pandian and Karur MLA and party district secretary V. Senthil Balaji, organised the demonstration here.

They raised slogans denouncing the “minority DMK government’s atrocity” of demolishing the huts and dwelling units of the poor and downtrodden who resided along the Erattai Vaikkal that was once an irrigation channel but had dwindled to become a drainage channel that bisected Karur.

MGR Mandram district secretary H. Shahul Hameed and leaders of other party front organisations participated in the demonstration.
