The novel scheme will cover all ration-card holders PANAJI: In its bid to counter the growing inflation affecting the common man, the Goa Government on Saturday announced a novel scheme to provide essential commodities at subsidised rates to those having ration cards. The programme, to be launched on Monday, will be implemented for six months, to begin with. Chief Minister Digambar Kamat told presspersons here on Saturday that those having ration cards would get essential commodities such as tur dal, edible oil, white peas, green gram, wheat flour, coconut and vegetables at wholesale rates. The State Agriculture Department will be the nodal agency for the programme under which commodities will be supplied through a network of outlets, under the Department of Civil Supply, Horticulture Corporation and the Cooperative Department. The Opposition BJP had initiated a programme to sell essential commodities at subsidised rates some time ago, compelling the Congress-led coalition Government to devise measures to combat mounting inflation. Goa being a tourist State, heavily reliant on outstation supplies of essential items such as milk, eggs and vegetables, the impact of inflation is felt much severely during the tourist season.
