NSS sees bid to disrupt peace and unity

PATHANAMTHITTA: The Nair Service Society (NSS) on Saturday expressed doubts whether the recent verbal attacks on NSS leaders by certain responsible quarters in the government were aimed at disturbing social peace and unity, especially among different forward communities.

Addressing a meeting held at Muthoor, near Thiruvalla, NSS general secretary P.K. Narayana Panicker and assistant secretary G. Sukumaran Nair alleged that “successive governments in the State were trying to break the unity among forward communities, by consciously sidelining the fact that they too were a part of the social fabric and that social justice was applicable to them as well.”

In his presidential address, Mr. Sukumaran Nair alleged that the beneficiaries of social justice in the State were often found to be the ‘creamy layer’ among various backward and other backward communities, and not the poor and the needy among them.

He said the NSS had never opposed the government unless the situation warranted so for a social case and that too in the larger interests of society. Its policy of keeping all political parties at equi-distance had left room for community members attached to different political parties to closely associate with NSS activities without any prejudice, he added.

Mr. Sukumaran Nair said the NSS had never interfered in the affairs of any other organisation, though there had been futile attempts to disturb NSS unity by certain outside quarters and there was every reason to suspect a similar move behind the recent verbal ‘attacks’ on the society leaders.

Mr Panicker alleged that the State government was yet to comply with the Supreme Court directive on the reservation issue.

He said the NSS had already set up 7,000-odd self-help groups with as many as 1,26,000 full-time women workers as part of its women empowerment programme across the State.

Addressing the meet, K.B. Ganeshkumar, MLA, alleged that the single-window system was the latest in the series of “Tughlaqian” reforms of the LDF government. He also called upon the NSS leadership to set up a centralised marketing system for the products of various self-help groups.

N.S. Prabhakaran Pillai, NSS taluk union president and D. Anilkumar, vice-president, also spoke.
