Saffron, the colour of things to come

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: The VIP gallery at the swearing-in ceremony of the new ministry provided a glimpse of the new players in the saffron dispensation. The gallery was filled with an unprecedented number of heads of various religious institutions.

Of the 100-odd people who sat in the VIP area, about 30 were swamijis. They were treated as special guests and were escorted to their places by government officials. In fact, a government protocol officer was put in charge of them.

While it is not unusual for newly-elected ministers and chief ministers to visit religious institutions, what was unusual was the large presence of Hindu religious heads at the swearing-in ceremony of a new ministry.
