ISRO in nutty issue

BANGALORE: Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is battling a court case in the Karnataka High Court. The dispute is to do with the total number of coconut trees in an agricultural plot sought to be acquired on behalf of ISRO for extending its Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan, Karnataka.

ISRO said it does not dispute either the award passed by the Hassan Assistant Commissioner on the quantum of the award to the land owner or the reference by the Hassan District and Sessions Court relating to the payment of compensation for acquiring the land.

Its only contention is the determination of market value for coconut trees that the District Judge had taken into consideration while fixing compensation.

In its petition filed before the Karnataka High Court, ISRO said it had sought land belonging to K.R. Kenchegowda in Kenchamaranahalli in Kasaba hobli. A notification for acquiring the land was issued.

The AC passed an award. Dissatisfied by the award, Kenchegowda filed a reference before the Additional Civil and District Judge (Senior Division), Hassan.

The District Judge enhanced the award from Rs. 72,560 for the land to Rs. 1.9 lakh and for the coconut trees on the land from Rs. 195 to Rs. 2,215 a tree. ISRO was directed to pay Rs. 4,76,967 as compensation to Kenchegowda.

It has urged the court to stay the award relating to the valuation of coconut trees.
