PUDUCHERRY: Leader of the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) in Parliament M. Ramadass has said that the Jawaharlal Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research, Puducherry Act, 2008, which was notified in the gazette on May 19, would allay all apprehensions with regard to the continuance of free treatment to the poor, fee structure for undergraduate students and service status of the employees. He told a press conference on Saturday that the Act also paved the way for having a separate budget for JIPMER and the allocations for it would increase from Rs.56 crore to Rs.300 crore. The Act was aimed at making JIPMER an institution of national importance and not for conferring autonomy on it, he said. He appealed to all sections concerned to extend cooperation for its successful implementation. The PMK would hold a rally here on June 15 to highlight the significance of the Act. According to Mr. Ramadass, the Puducherry station of the All India Radio would introduce FM service through a 15 KV transmitter. Places within 70-km radius could receive its broadcast from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Central government was prepared to establish a university in Karaikal region if the Union Territory government came forward to earmark 50 acres of land for the purpose. He called for steps to waive the farm loan up to March 31, 2006 as announced by the Union Territory government.
