Northeast youth’s distinction

Khadakwasla: As the 114th batch of cadets passed out from the National Defence Academy (NDA) here on Saturday, there was something special about the cadet who commanded the passing out parade as he made history in more than one way.

A farmer’s son from Manipur, 21-year-old Yumnam Romen Singh is the first cadet from the Northeast to win the President’s Gold Medal and to have the honour of commanding the passing out parade.

A broad grin on his face saying it all as he posed for photographs along with his parents and siblings after the parade.

Singh, who hails from a remote village in Manipur called Lamgmeidong, proudly declared that he was the first person to become a commissioned officer in the armed forces from within a periphery of ten kilometres around his native place. — PTI
