Fishermen venture into sea
Special Correspondent
NAGAPATTINAM: Fishermen with mechanised boats on the 188-km long Nagapattinam district coast have started venturing into the sea since wee hours of Saturday after the expiry of the 45-day mandatory ban on fishing for mechanised boats and trawlers to ensure growth of fishing during this season. However, fishermen having small fiberglass boats and catamarans were exempted from the ban during the period.
A cross-section of fishermen here told The Hindu on Saturday that good quantity of fish expected and the fishermen would reach the coast from Sunday morning.
R.M.P. Rajendran Nattar, a leader of fishermen association and also vice-president of Tamil Nadu Meenavar Peravai, said that the Tamil Nadu Government did not provide any relief to the fishermen during the lean period in spite of repeated appeals and representations to the Government and pointed out that many States, including Union Territory of Puducherry, were giving assistance to fishermen during the 45-day lean period.
