KOLKATA: India’s largest blast furnace the ‘H’ blast furnace at Tata Steel was blown in on Saturday marking the hitting of a major milestone by the company in its plans for augmenting capacity to 10 million tonnes by December 2010. The formal function was conducted by Union Steel Secretary R. S. Pandey at Jamshedpur who said that it was the largest furnace that had been completed in 25 months. The foundation for this 2.5 million tonnes per annum blast furnace was laid in June 2006, according to a company release. Besides Tata Steel Managing Director B. Muthuraman, chief operating officer H. M. Nerurakar, and senior officials of Paul Wurth Italia, PW India, PW Luxembourg and L&T, the consortium of companies which executed the project, were present on the occasion. Additional significanceMr. Muthuraman said “Steel is the backbone of the country and we want to ensure that India does not miss the bus.” The H Blast furnace will produce over 7,200 tonnes of hot metal a day. The event gets additional significance on account of the fact that it comes in a year when Tata Steel is obeserving its centenary.
