BANGALORE: Despite a slump in mango production this year, Bangaloreans have reason to cheer. The Horticulture Department has arranged a ‘Mango Expo’ this year at Lalbagh that will go on till June 8. The expo opened on Saturday. Speaking to presspersons here on Saturday, Horticulture Director K. Ramakrishnappa said as many as 38 stalls had been set up around the Glass House. This year was off-season for mango cultivation, he said, adding that the production had been nearly one lakh tonnes this year. Last year, Mr. Ramakrishnappa said, the production was eight lakh tonnes. Apart from the off-season trend, the untimely rain in March and April had an impact on mango production in the State. Thus, there had been huge demand for the king of fruits and the department had arranged the expo to make available quality fruits at affordable prices to the general public. The stalls will remain open from 8.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m.
