Steps taken to prevent flooding

Government sets up crisis management team

Collector to head crisis management team

Attitude of Railway authorities criticised

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Public Works Minister Mons Joseph said here on Saturday that the government had set up a crisis management team to handle flooding in the capital city during the monsoon.

Addressing a press conference here, Mr. Joseph said the District Collector would head the team and it would have a separate crisis management cell at the District Collectorate. He said the government had completed pre-monsoon preparatory work, mostly short-term measures, to tackle flooding that had become a permanent feature.

He said the State government had conveyed its displeasure to the Railway authorities for not cooperating with the current short-term work. The area near Thampanoor railway station continues to be a bottleneck and the railway authorities had not cooperated with efforts to remove the huge pile of garbage on their premises, he said. Giving a list of works that had been completed ahead of the promised date of May 31, Mr. Joseph said the popular committee, which had been set up to handle this issue, was satisfied with the work done. Some more work needed to be taken up, but these had been included in the long–term projects.
