THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kuwait Airways A-310 aircraft bound for Kuwait made an emergency landing at the international airport here on Saturday morning 20 minutes after takeoff following a snag in one of the engines. The flight KU 332, which took off at 7.25 a.m. for Kuwait as per schedule, returned to the airport at 7.45 a.m. and landed under full emergency measures, airport sources said. The commander of the aircraft informed the Air Traffic Control in Thiruvananthapuram that the ‘left side engine was being shut down’ and that it was returning. The aircraft with 193 passengers on board landed safely. Airport sources said the decision of the commander of the aircraft to make an emergency landing without ejecting the fuel was a big risk. Normally, the ATF is ejected while making emergency landing. The aircraft has been grounded, airline sources said. Some of the passengers bound for Kuwait and other onward destinations from Kuwait were transferred to Gulf-based carriers operating from the Thiruvananthapuram international airport. Other passengers have been accommodated in various city hotels and will be taken to Kuwait on Sunday’s scheduled flight. The spare-parts needed for rectifying the snag along with the personnel would be flown from Kuwait and is expected here early on Sunday. The aircraft, after rectifying the snag in the engine, will be ferried back to Kuwait on Sundayf, airline sources said.
