THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Irregularities have been detected in surprise raids carried out in leading textile showrooms in the State capital and Ernakulam on Saturday by officials of the Labour Department. The raids were conducted by Labour Commissioner K.S. Premachandra Kurup in Thiruvananthapuram and Additional Labour Commissioner M. K. Balachandran in Ernakulam. In Thiruvananthapuram, the raids were conducted at Ramachandran Textiles and Aiyappas Textiles and at Jayalekshmi Textiles in Kochi. The officials found that over 300 women were put up in a hostel run by Ramachandran Textiles at Padma Nagar. An official release said the hostel had space to accommodate only 50 persons and did not have adequate infrastructure facilities. The employees were not given proper wages or rest. The hostel had only four toilets. Four employees who were laid up at the hostel with fever were shifted to hospital by the officials. Mr. Kurup said the raids were aimed at ensuring that the employees received the benefits and legal protection under the Minimum Wages Act, Shops and Establishments Act, Child Labour Act and Inter-State Migrant Workers Act.
