Nepali Congress, UML concerned at Prachanda’s remarks

Prerana Marasini

KATHMANDU: Leaders of the Nepali Congress and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) have expressed concern over Maoist chairman Prachanda’s remarks on Friday.

Mr. Prachanda had said that his party deserved both the posts of President and Prime Minister. He said “losers cannot get these posts” (referring to the NC and the UML, which lost in the Constituent Assembly elections).

NC vice-president and Minister for Peace and Reconstruction Ram Chandra Paudel termed this ‘undemocratic’. “Demanding both President and Prime Minister posts is nothing but totalitarian tendency.”

UML leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari said their party could not agree with this statement. “President and Prime Minister should be from different parties.” The power-sharing issue has upset the parties including the Nepali Congress, the UML, the Madhesi Janadhikar Forum and the Maoists themselves. Also, these parties are in favour of electing the President through a simple majority of the CA members while the Maoists favour a majority of two-thirds.

Maoists’ youth wing Young Communist League on Saturday announced that it would stop taking action against anyone from now on and would rather cooperate with police.
