Noted educationist Mr. C. Ramaiah’s suggestion for locating central university in Visakhapatnam (The Hindu dated May 23) is unwarranted and irrational. His statement gives an impression that development in education should take place in a developed area ignoring the fact there is a need to develop under developed areas. Kadapa is one of the backward districts in our State. It is situated in Chennai-Mumbai railway route with an airport too. Since both metropolitan cities Chennai and Bangalore are close to Kadapa, proposed central university can get any logistical help and academic guidance from the professionals of there cities in case if it is needed. G. Sreenivasa Murthy, Kadapa Increase NREGS work daysNREGS is a boon to the rural workforce not only in terms of providing some wages both to men and women, but also in avoiding their migration to cities in search of work. And to make the scheme much more strong there is a need to increase the number of days beyond 100 and improve wage structure. G.Jagannadh, Anantapur Just demandThe speakers at the Heritage Day celebrations in Kadapa are justified in demanding that Gandikota fort should be declared as World Heritage Monument (The Hindu, April 21). Gandikota fort was built on a hill by Kakaraju in 1122 and played a significant role in history. Tavernier, a famous French traveller visited it in 1652 and compared it with Hampi, the capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, Located on the banks of Penna river and spread over a mile, it has several structures like palaces, a granary, ancient temples, Rayalacheruvu with perennial springs, Jamia Masjid, inscriptions of Hindu and Muslim rulers. A detailed study of the fort will throw more light on the socio economic conditions of Rayalaseema in general and Kadapa district in particular. K. Maddaiah, Kurnool IT on pensioners’ deposits?A retired employee may deposit his pension benefits in a bank for future requirements. Is the pensioner liable to pay IT on the returns? It is stated that the male pensioners who are senior citizens are exempted from IT up to Rs. 1.5 lakh. Then why are these banks harassing the pensioners by sending demand notices to pay IT on their FDs? May the government kindly clarify the matter. Dinakar, Nandyal
