Self-help groups to net profit through coir mats

Mahalir Thittam extends free assistance worth Rs.3.50 lakh

PUDUKOTTAI: Deviating from the routine economic activities, the panchayat level federation of self-help groups at Maravamadurai village near Ponnamaravathy has taken up a novel venture of weaving coir mats.

Encouraged by their innovative initiative, the Mahalir Thittam has extended free assistance by releasing Rs.3.50 lakh towards purchase of machinery.

Inaugurating the coir unit at a function held recently at Sadayampatti, a hamlet of the panchayat, Collector D. Uthirakkumaran appreciated the efforts of the federation that comprises 35 women members in jointly chalking out a more uncommon and obviously more profitable economic activity, taking maximum utilisation of locally available resources.

He appealed to the members to ensure quality in the end-product.

He also gave away a special incentive of Rs.10,000 to the Federation on the occasion.

Referring to the members’ plea for a free site for the construction of a work shed for the weaving unit, the Collector not only directed the Revenue officials to immediately identify a site but also assured them that the Mahalir Thittam would construct the shed.

The Collector later inspected the charcoal production unit being run by another self-help group in Mullipatti.

He assured the members that steps would be taken to sanction loan for the purchase of a mini-lorry for marketing the product.

Project Officer, Mahalir Thittam, S. Rajmohan, Secretary, District Supply and Marketing Society S. Sathyaseelan, president of Meladhaniyam village panchayat M. Thilagavathy were among those who offered felicitations.
