Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conduct examinations to recruit people for various government jobs. The Central Government examinations are held only in Hindi and English. Civil service examinations for IAS, IPS etc. are conducted in Hindi, English and other languages approved by the Constitution. Similarly, candidates appearing for the matric examinations conducted by the SSC are allowed to write in Hindi, English and the mother tongue. Those from North India find it easy to write the examinations in Hindi and English. Candidates who do not know Hindi, especially those from Tamil Nadu, can write the examinations only in English. Recently, the Central Government held an examination through the SSC to fill 3,000 vacancies in the income tax department in which 70 per cent of the people belonging to the North were selected. Out of the 200 candidates appointed in the income tax department in Nungampakkam, Chennai, 160 are from Bihar. Similarly, Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examinations can be written only in Hindi and English and mostly candidates from the North get selected. This will lead to a situation where only Hindi-speaking people will be found in the Southern Railway offices. V. Joseph Emmanuvel, Tiruchengode Anti-terrorism dayAnti-terrorism day is observed on May 21 (the day in 1991 when Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a ‘human’ bomb). Apart from the terrorists belonging to separatist, parochial and fundamentalist groups there are others who are generally not recognised as terrorists. Can we not call the persons who sold poisonous liquor resulting in the deaths of more than a hundred people terrorists? V.S.Venkatavaradan, Salem. (Readers can mail to cbereaders@thehindu.co.in)
