Summer festival concludes

Staff Reporter

YERCAUD: The four-day summer festival and flower show has attracted over 68,000 tourists from various parts, Collector N. Mathivanan has said.

Participating in the valedictory of the festival held here on Saturday, the Collector said that the festival had generated revenue of Rs. 5 lakh.

Botanical garden

The cultural programmes, competitions, dog show, boat race and sporting events organised as a part of the festival received good response.

A total of 23 government departments, three private organisations and four self-help groups established stalls in the exhibition, he added. The administration would create a botanical garden similar to the one at Udhagamandalam at an estimated cost of Rs. 10 crore. The garden will be ready for the next summer festival. The Salem Corporation would also create a beautiful lawn in the hill resort, he said. Mr. Mathivanan appealed to the people not to use polythene bags and plastic containers in the hill resort. The extensive use of polythene bags would pollute the environment. It is the responsibility of all sections of the people to protect the environment, he stressed.

He thanked various government departments, private firms, officials and festival committee members for extending their co-operation for the successful conduct of the festival.

Later, he distributed prizes and certificates to the winners of various competitions. He also distributed welfare assistance to beneficiaries. Yercaud MLA Tamilselvan, District Rural Development Agency Project Officer D. Jagannathan and senior officials were present in the function.
