From a leader of cooperative sector to Cabinet Minister

Staff Correspondent

Laxman Savadi is the BJP MLA for Athani

Laxman Savadi

Belgaum: Laxman Savadi, Athani MLA, who has been made a Minister in the B.S. Yeddyurappa Government, was born in a family of farmers at Nagnur P.K. on February 2, 1960.

He has very little to his claim on the educational front as he took a break from academics after Pre-University Course.

Mr. Savadi was influenced by the political philosophy of the late Jayaprakash Narayan and other stalwarts of the Janata Parivar.

He started his political career through the cooperative sector by taking up issues which were dear to farmers, particularly sugarcane growers.

Debut

He made an unsuccessful debut in the 1999 Assembly elections when he contested as an independent candidate from Athani. Mr. Savadi lost to Shahjahan Dongargaon of the Congress by a margin of 3,019 votes.

However, he romped home as the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate in the 2004 elections by defeating Mr. Dongargaon by a margin of 31,324 votes. This time, he defeated his political mentor and the Congress leader Kiran Kumar Tatyagouda Patil by a margin of 21,668 votes.

Known for his articulate speeches and discussions Mr. Savadi missed the ministerial berth in the previous Janata Dal (Secular)-BJP coalition Government as caste equations did not favour him then. He belongs to Ganager sub-caste of Lingayat community, to which Mr. Yeddyurappa also belongs to.

Father of three sons and one daughter, Mr. Savadi and his family’s assets have been put at Rs. 2,13,46,044, according to the affidavit submitted by him to the Election Commission while filing nomination papers to contest the Assembly elections. He also owns two cars, one jeep and a tractor.

He had declared assets worth Rs. 44,61,036 in 2004.
