Efforts to help accident victims lauded

KPCC to pay bereaved families Rs. 10,000 each

Rs. 5,000 to be given to those injured


HASSAN: Senior Congress leader and MLC S.M. Anand here on Sunday complimented Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa and Minister R. Ashok for visiting Hassan on Saturday to console Basavanahalli Koppalu victims, who are undergoing treatment at the Hassan Institute of Medical Sciences.

In all, 25 people died and 54 injured when the group was on its way to Ramanathapura Agrahara in a lorry which overturned and fell in a trench 50 feet deep.

Mr. Anand said he had appealed to the Chief Minister to enhance the compensation to Rs. 2 lakh for families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured. He said Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge had announced payment of Rs. 10,000 to each of the 25 bereaved families and Rs. 5,000 to each of the 54 injured. Mr. Anand said he had also appealed to Mr. Yeddyurappa to arrange for fertilizers to be distributed among farmers as sowing of potato seeds had already begun.
