DAVANGERE: Joint Director of Agriculture Shivamurthappa has said that over 8,750 tonnes of fertilizer is expected to be supplied to Davangere district by June 10.

Farmers of the district would be provided with sufficient fertilizer and seeds too, he added.

There was no urgent need for fertilizer, he said but added that farmers had already started harvesting paddy crop.

Some farmers, fearing short supply of fertilizer, had been purchasing them he said and added that there was no need for anybody to panic. He said sufficient quantity of fertilizer would be supplied to the district and appealed to farmers not to believe reports of scarcity.

The department had taken steps to ensure that farmers were not cheated by fertilizer dealers, he claimed.

Requirements

The department had estimated the fertilizer requirements of the district by conducting a field study of various parts of Davangere.

The district was also expected to receive sufficient quantity of seeds this year and there would be no scarcity this season,

Mr. Shivamurthappa said. However, he pointed out that two packets of seeds would be given to each farmer at a subsidized price and those who required more seeds could get them from the open market. Jowar, maize, thor, ragi, groundnut and sunflower seeds were expected to be supplied to the district in another seven days time, he said.

‘Rasta roko’

Farmers had staged a “rasta roko” in the past two days at the Iffcko office here demanding adequate supply of fertilizer.
