Comprehensive pension scheme needed in State: Chandy

Staff Reporter

PALAKKAD: Leader of the Opposition Oommen Chandy has urged the State government to bring in a comprehensive pension scheme for various sections of employees, including those in the cooperative sector, considering that in the near future the amount required for pension disbursement is going to be more than that for salary disbursement.

Inaugurating the valedictory function of the three-day State conference of the Kerala Cooperative Service Pensioners Association here on Saturday, Mr. Chandy said that a situation had come in the State when the period for which a person drew pension was becoming more than the years of service because of increased life expectancy.

He said that the State government had recently failed to disburse pension to the retired employees of the Kerala State Transport Corporation. The pensioners in the cooperative sector were getting only a small amount.

He said that the cooperative sector would be able to play a major role in arresting the rise in prices of essential commodities. They had to intervene in the market with social commitment and with a liberal approach.

The meeting was presided over by K.K. Divakaran, MLA, and addressed by association president C.M. Karunakaran Nambiar, among others.
