BJP leaders draw criticism

Bangalore: Congress leader M. Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday criticised Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs, including Jagadish Shettar, for not reining in their supporters who indulged in violence and burning of KSRTC buses in several parts of the State in protest against the denial of ministerial berth to some persons.

Speaking to presspersons here, Mr. Kharge said their non-inclusion (in the Ministry) was an internal affair of the BJP, and its leaders should settle their differences among themselves and not allow people to take law into their hands.

The State Government should immediately and strictly act against those creating law and order problems, he said.

Mr. Kharge demanded that the loss incurred by the KSRTC and other organisations should be borne by the BJP.

The protest was for their selfish ends and it was not for any great cause, he said.

He said that all the 110 MLAs of the ruling party could not be inducted into the Ministry.

It was sad that the BJP legislators did not realise this. How could a party that did not understand such simple things deliver the goods, he asked.

On the statements by BJP leaders such as K.S. Eshwarappa and BJP State president D.V. Sadananda Gowda criticising Governor Rameshwar Thakur for reportedly refusing to address the joint session of the legislature and instead asking the Government to first prove its majority, Mr. Kharge said Mr. Thakur had followed the Constitution.

The Congress leader said the BJP should not misguide the public on the issue, and advised it to consult legal experts before criticising the Governor, a constitutional functionary.

He said the newly elected MLAs had not yet taken oath and the BJP Government was yet to prove its majority.

Mr. Kharge said the State had been receiving good rain and the Government should work on increasing food production.

Farmers in Haveri, Gulbarga and other north Karnataka districts were demanding seeds and fertilizers, and their requirements should be given priority, the Congress leader said.
