Heavy rain in several parts of State

Karnataka Bureau

Bangalore: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Sunday announced the arrival of the southwest monsoon over parts of coastal and south interior Karnataka. After its onset over Kerala was announced on May 31, the monsoon has now advanced to Karwar, Chitradurga, Vellore and Chennai, according to the IMD.

The monsoon system advanced into Karnataka on Saturday, with several parts of the State recording heavy rainfall. Bangalore received 7 cm, Ankola (Uttara Kannada) and Karwar 6 cm each; and Kottigehara (Chikmagalur) received 5 cm. This meant a drop in mercury, with Bangalore enjoying a minimum of 18.7 degrees on Sunday.

However, the monsoon has not yet reached north interior Karnataka, said A. Muthuchami, Director of the Meteorological Centre here. It could be another two days before these districts receive rain, he added.

The monsoon takes an average of three days to advance from Kerala to Karnataka, whereas this year it took only 24 hours to move into Karnataka, Dr. Muthuchami pointed out.

Moderate to heavy rain is likely over coastal Karnataka and south interior Karnataka and in a few places over north interior Karnataka in the next two days, according to the Meteorological Centre.
