HYDERABAD: The Left parties on Sunday complimented the people for ‘teaching a lesson’ to the Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) in the just-concluded byelections to 18 Assembly and four Lok Sabha seats. B.V. Raghavulu and K. Narayana, secretaries of the CPI (M) and CPI respectively, in separate statements issued here described the results as “mixed”. Mr. Raghavulu maintained that ‘despite resorting to misuse of the official machinery and use of money, liquor and other allurements, the Congress could not secure the desired results’. He claimed that the voting pattern showed people’s ‘increased disenchantment’ with the ruling party. He said the CPI (M)-TDP alliance had led to the Telugu Desam candidates’ victory. However, Mr. Raghavulu felt that if all sections in local TDP units had worked with determination the CPI (M) nominees would have secured more votes than 16,618 and 13,060 votes it received in Musheerabad and Cheryal constituencies respectively. ‘Thoughtless strategy’Mr. Narayana blamed TRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao’s ‘thoughtless political strategy’ and ‘dictatorial attitude’ for causing the byelections. He described Mr. Rao’s narrow victory, in contrast to over two lakh majority in the past, as ‘moral defeat although a technical win’. According to the CPI leader, the results showed that a separate Telangana State could not be secured by the TRS alone, but required the cooperation of all political parties.
