Telgi was shifted to Pune in 2004 following threat to his life Special court is the final stages of hearing two cases
Law catches up: Prime accused in the stamp paper Abdul Karim Telgi being escorted by the police at City Railway Station in Bangalore on Sunday. BANGALORE: Abdul Karim Telgi, prime accused in the multi-crore stamp paper racket, was brought to the Bangalore Central Prison on Sunday. He will be housed in a cell and will be produced before the city’s Special Court hearing the cases on Monday. Telgi was brought to Bangalore Central Prison following a body warrant issued by the Special Court to bring him from Pune’s Yerwada Central Prison. He left Pune on Saturday afternoon by train and arrived here in the morning. He was accompanied by a good number of escorts from Maharashtra. “Some City Armed Reserve personnel had been sent to the City Railway Station to escort him to the prison,” Chief Superintendent of Bangalore Prison M.C. Vishwanathaiah told The Hindu. Soon after Telgi’s arrival, the prison authorities sent him to the barricaded room in the prison. This room has been fitted with closed circuit camera to help the Chief Superintendent keep a vigil on Telgi’s movement. On Monday, Mr. Vishwanathaiah will be escorting Telgi from his room to the video conferencing studio in prison. Telgi will be produced before the Special Court using the video conferencing facility. Mr. Vishwanathaiah will be doing this every time Telgi is taken to the studio. He will personally ensure Telgi’s safety and also see that none of the police or prison personnel get in touch with the prisoner. Telgi, who was earlier lodged in the Bangalore Central Prison, was moved to Pune’s Yerwada Central Prison in 2004 following threat to his life in the Bangalore Prison. Following BSNL’s action to disconnect the ISDN line used for video conferencing facility in the Pune prison for overdue of service charges, the trail of the stamp paper racket cases by the Special Court came to a halt. The court is the final stages of hearing two cases registered with Upparpet police station and Madiwala police station respectively.
