Time to redefine politics, says Lok Satta

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Lok Satta Party (LSP), which fielded candidates in four Assembly constituencies in the byelections, expressed happiness that it could poll 14 per cent of votes and said it was an indicator that people were hungry for ‘real change’.

At a press conference here on Sunday afternoon, LSP president Jayaprakash Narayan said the time for redefining politics and power had come. However, despite the party’s encouraging performance, a lot of work was required to channelise the people’s hunger and convert it into a potent political weapon.

“The votes we got was despite abysmally low polling, and scrupulous adherence to ethical values in electioneering,” he said, adding that the LSP could tap only a fraction of the people’s enthusiasm because of the high entry barriers a new party faced in the present political system. Campaigning by traditional parties was marked by abusive rhetoric, divisive politics, absence of ideas and flow of money and liquor and it again underlined the need for a new era of people-oriented politics, he stated.
