Provide double delight to their schools too
S. Karthikeyan. VIRUDHUNAGAR: The roll of honour at the Saliyar Mahajana Higher Secondary school at Aruppukottai says that G. Somasundaram was the school topper in 10th examination in the year 1978. Thirty year down the line, his son, S. Karthikeyan, retained the pride of his family. He bettered his father’s record in more than one ways. (The father had secured 409 marks). Karthikeyan’s 492 brought laurels to his school not only at the district level, but also at the State-level. Karthikeyan topped the district for the total marks, and also shared the third rank in Science with a centum. “This is a school which is not the first choice for the brightest of the students. Most of our students are below average and they come from economically weaker section. This boy has made us proud,” said the school management board secretary, A. Tiruvannamalai. Similar is case of D. Rajesh Kannan of Sivanantha Matriculation, who is the school topper and district third in matriculation examination. His feat at the school follows a similar achievement made by his elder sister, Kalavathi, last year. The district-level achievers, like these students, had not undergone any tuition except for the special coaching given at their schools. “I usually discuss all my subjects with my sister,” says Rajesh Kannan, son of a mill-labourer. For, Pa. Yogaprabha (district second in S.S.L.C.) and P. Binu, their teacher-parents guided them throughout to perform better. Yogaprabha’s mother, a Government school teacher, helped her by conducting frequent tests. Binu was luckier, as both her parents were teachers. “I used to clarify all my doubts then and there,” Binu said. Except for Yogaprabha, who wants to become a doctor, all other district toppers want to pursue engineering. But, Rajesh Kannan is more ambitious than all other engineering-aspirants. “I want to do engineering only in IIT,” he says.
