Sirsi: A live worm measuring 12 cm was removed from a man’s eye after a minor surgery here on Saturday. Honnu Gowda of Hosmane in Hanumanthi village, near here, complained of severe pain and swelling in his eye eight days ago. He had noticed a tiny thing which fell in his eyes while he was working in his field. When he contacted an eye surgeon, he was recommended to undergo surgery as the doctor suspected it to be an infection. In the course of surgery, the surgeon found a live worm in his eye. The surgeon said that the worm was about 10 days old, which would have been in Gowda’s eye from the egg stage. The worm was identified as Loa Loa worm (also known as the eye worm) by S.T. Prabhu, entomologist in Forestry College, here. Such worms mainly infect people who live near swamps and rain forests. They are more common in animal hosts rather than human hosts, he said.
