Fishermen’s wait for catch continues

Staff Reporter

TIRUNELVELI: Fishermen of the southern districts are so dull, as the fishing activity that was revived only a couple of days ago after 45-days ban is not able to meet even the ‘fuel expenditure,’ owing to poor harvest.

Those who tried their luck in the ‘southern side’ i.e. off Manappadu or Uvari coast on the first and second days after the resumption of work returned to their base of Tuticorin fishing harbour empty handed while the boats that ventured up to ‘Ervadi sea’ on the northern side of Tuticorin fishing harbour had something to celebrate as most of the boats experienced reasonably good catches with prawn and other costly fish varieties.

But this situation too vanished quickly, fishermen say. After the fishermen started constructing huge mechanised boats each at the cost of nearly Rs.35 to 40 lakh, they have to spend a minimum of Rs. 18,000 a day for fuel alone and require another Rs. 600 for ice bars apart from the wages for the crew.

If a boat returns to the shore with the catches worth Rs. 25,000, it will only meet the regular expenditure and the loan repayment and there is nothing left out for the owner, who has made a huge investment.

Since the mechanised boats are allowed to leave their base only after 5 a.m. and have to return to the fishing harbour by 9 p.m. in the wake of the agreement reached between the fishermen of mechanised and country boats, those who venture towards Uvari can try their luck thrice while five attempts can be made if the fishermen prefer ‘Ervadi sea’ as ‘running duration’ is somewhat less.
