This Day That Age
President Rene Coty on May 31 sent a letter to the President of the National Assembly, naming Gen. Charles De Gaulle for investiture as Prime Minister. The Socialist Party Parliamentary group had voted to approve this move and this virtually assured De Gaulle’s taking office. Before taking the vote, the Parliamentary group and the Executive Committee of the Socialist Party decided that the Socialist Deputies would have freedom to vote as they liked on June 1, and freedom to join the De Gaulle Government if they so chose. At a conference on May 31, Gen. De Gaulle said that he would respect the obligations France had taken under the North Atlantic and the European Treaties, informed sources said. The General also indicated that he would end the state of emergency in France as soon as order was ensured and that he undertook to maintain public liberties. He said he was in favour of a federal system for the French Union (overseas territories).
