NEW DELHI: Ukraine’s Vassily Ivanchuk defeated Spain’s Alexei Shirov 3-1 to earn the right to challenge Viswanathan Anand in the final of the Leon rapid chess tournament in Leon, Spain, on Saturday. In the second four-game game semifinal, Ivanchuk won the first game with white in 45 moves and doubled the lead by winning the second in 33 moves. In the third game, the player drew in a marathon lasting 76 moves and this result gave Ivanchuk an unbeatable lead. In the inconsequential fourth game, a draw in 29 moves left Ivanchuk a comfortable winner. On Friday, Anand had secured his place in the final.
