FIRM ACTION: Dumping of garbage may soon be a thing of the past. A scene on Vandikaran Street, Velachery. CHENNAI: A total of 65 persons were fined on Sunday by the Chennai Corporation for dumping debris or garbage in various localities, including Virugambakkam, Anna Nagar, Aminjikarai, Valluvar Kottam, Anna Salai, Kodambakkam, Adyar and Thiruvanmiyur. Among those who paid Rs.500 fine for dumping debris were contractors at a theatre complex on Perambur Barracks Road. Those who paid Rs.100 for dumping garbage include a hotel on Anna Salai and a store on Kodambakkam High Road, said officials of Chennai Corporation. Junior Engineers, Sanitary Inspectors and Conservancy Inspectors, with receipt books, were deputed for the job of identifying offenders in all 155 wards. Mayor M. Subramanian said that civic officials did not go to slum areas as the focus was initially on commercial areas and main roads. “Residents who are found littering are let off with strict warnings,” he added. Corporation Commissioner Rajesh Lakhoni said the proposal to impose fines for spitting, urinating or defecating in public places had not been introduced since a lot of ground work was yet to be done. “In slums we want to have residents inculcate the habit of using garbage collection service that comes to their areas in the mornings,” he added. The civic body had originally decided to introduce the system of imposing fines from April, but decided to postpone it by two months to procure compactor trucks for garbage collection and construct public toilets.
