Local bodies told to carry out sanitation works

Staff Reporter

Need for medical camps, awareness campaigns stressed

Notice served on 16 abattoirs

Migrant labourers being monitored

KOCHI: The District Development Committee has asked the local self-government bodies and health and other departments to carry out efficient and intensive immunity campaigns and sanitation works in view of the onset of monsoon.

MLAs raised this demand at the meeting held here on Saturday. K. N. Raji, Additional District Magistrate, presided over the meeting.

M. K. Purushothaman, MLA said that the Panchayat Deputy Director should examine and report on whether the Rs. 10,000 assistance given for ward level sanitation works had been effectively utilised. The need was for medical camps and awareness campaigns instead of public meetings and rallies, he said. He also called for overall review of the tsunami rehabilitation works.

The Committee said that special schemes for immunisation and sanitation works should be drawn up for areas like Vypeen, Paravur and Vadakekkara, where epidemics had broken out in the past.

Any delay in implementing the drinking water supply project, for which GIDA had given Rs. 5 crore, for resolving the drinking water problem in Vypeen would not be advisable, Mr. Purushothaman and Simon Britto, MLA, said.

Principal Agriculture Officer informed the meeting that Rs. 73 lakh had been distributed as relief to those who suffered agriculture loss in the last two years. Only Rs. 6 lakh remains to be distributed on this count, he said.

District Medical Officer said that closure notices had been served on 16 abattoirs across the district, which had failed to maintain sanitation provisions. Besides, health squads had been directed to ensure hygienic conditions in hotels. District Planning Officer said that awareness campaigns were being organised in association with labour department in areas with high concentration of migrant labourers. M. M. Monayi, MLA, said that a decision should be reached without delay about the minor irrigation projects, which need to be included in the NABARD scheme. He also asked for timely maintenance of the irrigation projects.

He said that the delay in the completion of the approach road to Brahmapuram bridge and renovation of the road at Karimugal was unjustifiable. Mr. Monayi asked the district authorities to convene a meeting at the earliest to discuss the issue.
