Reserved sites

Coimbatore Corporation has asked every layout resident to submit a list of reserved sites in their colony. The Corporation has also welcomed the court directive in this regard.

Why have such reserved sites in the adjoining ‘panchayat’ areas of the city been omitted? In New Thillai Nagar entire areas marked as ‘reserved’ sites in the approved plan of the layouts have been sold and educated persons in government service have bought these, built houses and the panchayat has assessed house tax, provided Siruvani water connections.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board has provided power connections. New Thillai Nagar does not have a park or a playground. Such is the scale of misuse of the reserved sites. I request the Corporation to take up the adjoining panchayat areas also in their fight against misuse of the reserved sites in Coimbatore.

S. Sunder,

P.N. Pudur.

Noble service

The yeoman service rendered by Mr. E.N. Sreeram and Mr. S. Kowshik is noble and commendable. (‘They make blood available anytime, May 14). Mr. Sreeram and Mr. Kowshik deserve all support and encouragement. Donating blood while living and donating eyes after death are sacred. Hats off to The Hindu for bringing out their good services to limelight.

Train facility

Passenger traffic between Trichy and Coimbatore has increased manifold in recent years. However, train facility in this sector is woefully inadequate. The railways should implement the following measures to mitigate the sufferings of the people. 1. More coaches should be attached to the Palakkad-Trichy-Palakkad fast passenger as this train is always heavily crowded. Also, a few sleeper coaches should be attached to this train so that those who can afford to pay more and senior citizens can avail of this facility. 2. Jan Shatabdi Express has become very popular now. While the journey time from Coimbatore to Trichy is only around three hours and 30 minutes, it takes almost five hours in the return direction as the train is invariably made to wait at many points to give way to oncoming trains despite this being in a category higher than the superfast trains.

There should be stops at Coimbatore North and Trichy Fort stations. 3. Chennai-Mangalore-Chennai Expresses take more time than the Palakkad-Trichy-Palakkad fast passenger to cover the distance between Trichy and Coimbatore.

This should be reduced. Also, the departure time at Trichy should be fixed at 6.15 a.m. as it originally was for the Trichy-Mangalore Express. 4. Ernakulam-Trichy-Ernakulam Expresses arrive in Coimbatore well past midnight.

If the timings of these trains are changed to around 10.30 p.m. this will benefit the passengers travelling between these two cities.

K.N. Ramani,

Viswanathapuram, Tudiyalur.

Road accidents

Road accidents occur frequently on Thadagam Road. The stretch between Lawley Road junction and Thadagam Road is accident-prone. Nearly 40 lives were lost recently in accidents here.

Lorries and private buses run at high speed taking innocent lives. Speed breakers should be installed here. Trafffic police should also monitor speed of the vehicles continuously.

Balamani,

Edayarpalayam Post.

Train time

Whenever train number 2680 reaches Chennai Central at 2.30 p.m., there is hardly 30 minutes to board the train for journey to Coimbatore Junction (train number 2679). During this time coaches are not cleaned. It is an ordeal for passengers with a heavy luggage to board the train in this short span of time.

If the train number 2680 arrives late the platform will be flooded with passengers from the train and those who want to board the train to go to Coimbatore. To avoid inconvenience to the passengers I request that the departure time be changed to 3 p.m.

N.R. Ravisankar,

Vilankurichi.

Maintain streetlights

Street light maintenance in Saibaba Mission area leaves much to be desired. Many stretches of Thadagam, Bharathi Park and Alagesan main roads and many cross roads in this locality remain plunged in pitch darkness. Patch works carried out after provision of underground drainage connections and repairs to water supply mains have left numerous potholes and protrusions on roads.

Roadside trees with low branches, especially near Pillayar Temple on Bharathi Park, 8th cross road, which virtually hit heads of the passers-by, pose a potential threat.

Packs of stray dogs and orphaned horses add to the woes of walkers in the area.

K.D. Viswanaathan,

Thadagam Road.

Monitor vehicles

It is indeed sad to see many innocent lives killed in frequent road accidents. Authorities have not done anything to check accidents. Speed of vehicles and eye sight of truck drivers should be monitored continuosly. Lack of sleep for the driver also results in accidents. Speed breakers should be installed at accident-prone zones on Thadagam Road, Mettupalayam Road, Avinashi Road and Trichy Road .

V. Douglas Kirpa Raja,

Avinashi Road.

Railway refund

I had booked on February 17 three tickets to Tirunelveli in III tier air-conditioned coach in Nagercoil Express from Coimbatore for March 20. The tickets were booked through the IRCTC website where I have my user account. The tickets’ PNR number was 4261325662. Later I cancelled one ticket and got refund. On March 20 owing to heavy rain and derailment the train was cancelled.

I applied for cancellation of the remaining two tickets. As the site was not available, I was asked to contact the Delhi office of IRCTC. The Delhi office asked me to send an e-mail to etickets@irctc.co.in for cancellation. I have so far not received any replies to a number of mails I sent to IRCTC nor have I got the amount (Rs. 1,000) back.

R.M. Subrahmanian,

Oppanakkara Street.

Torture of boys

It is shocking that three boys aged between 13 and 15 were handcuffed, beaten and given electric shock in police custody (May 2 and 3). This is illegal, barbaric and a high-handed action on the part of the police. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) should take up the case for inquiry. The police cannot arbitrarily inflict torture on suspects before the case is tried in a court of law and judgment is delivered.

The police exceeding their limits should be suitably dealt with.

S. Venkatachalam,

Kavundampalayam.

Handle with care

LPG refills are dumped at a central location for local distribution by the delivery staff. Filled cylinders are thrown from a height on the roadside giving pressure on the cylinder.

This might cause explosion. Some rubber material like used tyres should be used which will give a cushioning effect to the cylinders and reduce the impact.

B.R. Shetty,

Kovaipudur.

Wall demolition

This refers to the report on the demolition of the dividing wall (May 7) at Uthapuram in Madurai district.

The Hindu was the first to report on the electrification of the wall, the Chief Minister had acted as Periyar and the District Collector Jawahar as Jawaharlal Nehru.

In fact, the place has been converted as Uthamapuram instead of Uthapuram as the Chief Minister has said.
