Drinking water taps at the Tirupur railway station platforms remain dry for days. —

TIRUPUR: The Tirupur railway station, which handles thousands of passengers every day and one of the top revenue earning stations in Salem division, lags behind in providing amenities to passengers.

The works for heightening and widening of platforms are almost over at the station. But a vast portion of the platforms, which always overflow with hundreds of passengers, has gone without shelter. Passengers, particularly elderly and children, continue to suffer as there is no place to take shelter during rain and summer.

Regular commuters were happy when the Railway authorities began constructing 50- metre-long shelters on both the platforms a few months ago.

The work initially progressed fast but came to a standstill during the last couple of months, leaving the passengers in the lurch.

Contractor

When contacted, the railway authorities blame the contractor for the delay. A senior official said that despite repeated warnings the contractor failed to turn up to carry out the works.

Adding to the woes, passengers find it very difficult as most of the public taps on the platforms go without water for months.

While the railway officials claim that there was no scarcity for drinking water on the station premises, the public continue to suffer without drinking water to beat the summer heat.
