CHENNAI: Of the Divine names, Rama is unique in that it is also an incantation (Mantra) capable of delivering man from the cycle of transmigration. Its potency is immeasurable and saints have attested to its life-saving capacity. This can be seen from the Ramayana itself in the context of Hanuman locating Sita. When Hanuman sighted Sita in the Ashoka grove after searching the whole of Lanka, She was on the verge of giving up Her life because the harassment of the ogresses at Ravana’s behest tormented Her mind continuously and She had lost all hopes of Her rescue by Rama. In his discourse, Sengalipuram Sri B.Damodara Dikshitar said just when Hanuman saw Sita underneath a Simsapa tree and identified Her, Sita noticed auspicious omens on Her body and gave up Her attempt to strangle Herself. Hanuman’s joy of finding Her became tinged with the anxiety of how he was going to announce himself to Sita without frightening Her and arousing suspicion among those guarding Her. He had seen Sita’s precarious condition for himself and hence the onus of saving Her at all costs was now on him. For that he had to gain Her confidence. Besides he had declared when he set out on his mission that he would not return without finding Sita. All these thoughts crossed his mind as he sat deliberating on the further course of action atop a branch of the tree under which Sita was seated. The moment he realised that he could achieve his objective only with the strength of Rama’s name and not just by his prowess and acumen, Hanuman decided to narrate the glory of Rama and deliver His message to Sita after She was convinced that he was His envoy. Hanuman’s alacrity and sagacity of mind, and devotion to Rama and Sita came to the fore in this context as he set about accomplishing the task at hand. He started narrating the story of Rama from His birth to the point where he had found Sita, and as Hanuman expected She was impressed with his sweet and reassuring speech and looked around. The reservation Sita had when She saw his form disappeared when Hanuman convinced Her with his deft handling of the situation till She was sure of his identity.
