Special training for disabled

A two-day special training for differently-abled children was held at Annavasal in Pudukottai district.

Toys, telephone towers, garlands, flower vases made of waste materials such as cotton, paper and sticks of ice candy were displayed to attract the students.

They were also enlightened through cultural programmes.

Chief Educational Officer (SSA) T. Periyasamy said the objective of the programme was to impart vocational skills to the students as part of SSA. Additional Assistant Elementary Education Officer Kalidasan and Supervisor of Block Resource Centre N. Periasamy inaugurated the training programme.

First rank in Karaikal district

M. Sivasakthi of Karaikal Ammaiyar Government-aided High School, Karaikal, secured the first rank in the tenth standard public examinations in Karaikal district by scoring 488 marks out of 500.

S. Sivaranjani of Nirmalarani Girls Higher Secondary School, Karaikal, secured the second rank by getting 487 marks out of 500 .

N.Jagan of Servite High School, Kottucherry, secured the third rank by scoring 485 out of 500 marks.

N. Vasanthakumar, Karaikal Collector, on Saturday honoured the rank holders by offering them gifts at the Collector’s office.

In a class of his own

S. Selvaraj of Rani Meyyammai Higher Secondary School, Puliyur, near Karur, who secured the third rank in the State in the recent SSLC examinations, hails from the rural area of Pazhaya Ganjamanur.

He never sacrificed his penchant for television and entertaining himself for the sake of getting high marks. Remarkably, Selvaraj never took private tuition.

What the teachers taught in the classroom was enough to propel him to achieve a podium-finish in the State list.

The polite student did not fail to acknowledge the role of his teachers when his hour of glory came.

School topper feted

M. Rasi, a student of Government High School at Maruthanthalai in Pudukottai district, secured the first rank in the school in the SSLC examinations.

She scored 467 out of 500. Apart from scoring 97 marks each in Mathematics and Science, Rasi also scored well in Tamil (91), English (89) and Social Science (93).

Six students of the school scored over 400 marks in the examinations.

The school recorded 88 per cent pass.

Headmaster A. Sosai felicitated her.

First-aid training imparted

A training programme on first-aid was conducted for standard XII students of Mount Zion Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Pudukottai.

Dr. Charles Stafford from Loma Linda University (in the US) was the resource person.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Stafford stressed the need for creating awareness among general public on the importance of first-aid.

He cited many instances where lives were saved through first-aid and taught the students on how to respond to medical emergency.

He also demonstrated the basic first-aid techniques.

Headmistress Florence Jayabarathan said the first-aid club of the school has been functioning actively. The programme was of immense help, she added.
