COST-EFFECTIVE: P. S. Raju with his biogas plant in Puducherry. Project Director of Renewable Energy Agency D. Selvi is in the picture. PUDUCHERRY: Save dwindling fossil fuels and get a smoke-free cooking experience with biogas, says P.S. Raju who on Monday started promoting a biogas plant for cooking. The biogas plant needs no firewood, but only five kg of kitchen waste daily. Furthermore, it will produce organic manure for sustainable agriculture, Mr. Raju says . Alternative energyCalling biogas a good alternative energy, he says: “We will also supply oil cakes or starch material of one kg a day to give 1 cubic meter of gas. This is equal to 0.43 kg of gas, which is sufficient to cook for four or five persons.” The slurry from the plant can be used as organic manure, wet fertilizer, dry fertilizer and composting material for aquaculture and vermiculture and humus to improve soil health, he says. No smoke“Like LPG, the plant does not emit smoke. And it is also less accident-free,” he says. Laboratory testAccording to D. Selvi, Project Director of Renewable Energy Agency of Pondicherry, the product should be tested and proved. “We have asked him to apply for the laboratory test and to submit a detailed project report. This will be sent to the Ministry,” she says.
