Paramedical institute at MCH soon

FOR THE PEOPLE: Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy inaugurating various wards and equipment of departments at Government Medical College Hospital in the city on Monday.

Kozhikode: A regional institute of paramedical sciences is being established at Government Medical College Hospital (MCH) here as part of the programmes being launched to mark the second anniversary of the Left Democratic Front government.

This was announced by Health Minister P.K. Sreemathy while inaugurating new facilities at the MCH on Monday.

The government order regarding setting up of the paramedical institute would be issued in two weeks. The institute, being set up at a cost of Rs.90 crore, would conduct 57 new courses. An area of 25 acres would have to be acquired for the project, she said.

Ms. Sreemathy announced that the ophthalmology wing of the medical college would be converted into the regional institute. A sum of Rs.50 lakh had been allotted for that purpose. This would be in addition to an equal amount that had been sanctioned for the project earlier.

Renovation

The casualty wing was being renovated at a cost of Rs.45 lakh. A sum of Rs.1 crore had been sanctioned for the hostel for MBBS students. An equal amount would be sanctioned soon for a hostel for nursing students. The government was considering a proposal to build a hostel for dental college also, she said.

The Minister inaugurated new equipment for removing stone in kidneys and treatment of cancer, ICU for medicine in in-patients wards in super specialty wings, and renovated out-patient wards for ophthalmology and surgery departments.

New nursing colleges

Ms. Sreemathy also announced at the function that a State Institute of Medical Education and Technology had already been formed to promote research and studies in the field of medical education. Three nursing colleges would be started under this institute in Palakkad, Kasaragod and Ernakulam this academic year.

Forests Minister Benoy Viswom pointed out at the function that in the past two years development works costing Rs.30 crore had been carried out at the Kozhikode medical college. At the function the Minister presented mementoes to VKC and Parison groups which had donated chairs to Surgery-ICU and renovated medical ward number 4 and 6.

Geeta, Medical College Principal C. Sudheendra Ghosh and Superintendent of the Institute of Maternity and Child Health V.R. Rajendran spoke.
