Cases of credit card frauds and fraudulent transfer of money from one account to another through net-banking were recently detected in Chennai and Tiruchi cities. The outcome of the enquiry came as a terrible shock _ most of the accused were employees of private banks. It was found that bank and credit card frauds could be committed either by such employees or with their assistance. But it also came to light that most of these employees were suspended or dismissed from the banks. Therefore, private banks are requested to make a thorough verification of character, antecedents and identity of all the candidates through police and revenue departments before appointing them. K. Manickavasagam, Thanjavur Trouble at ATMOf late, all banks have automatic teller machines to render round the clock money drawing facility. But the way in which these ATMs function now becomes questionable. A private sector bank’s ATM at Karur does not identify the customers’ data when the card is inserted and says “Sorry...cannot accept this card”. When the same card is inserted in the same machine after some time, there is no problem. Similarly, even if sufficient funds are available in one’s account, the ATM rejects the same saying: “This amount can not be drawn”. If the process is repeated after some time, the machine obliges. It appears that such problems arise due to network problems. Of course, such incidents create panic among the customers about the integrity of their accounts. Bank administrators should ensure smooth functioning of these ATMs. SP. Murugappan, Karur Fare unfairA few days back, I boarded a Transport Corporation express bus at Central Bus Stand, Tiruchi, bound for Thanjavur. A fare of Rs.18 was collected from me. To my utter surprise, the bus stopped at all regular stops en route to Thanjavur. It is a pity that ordinary buses plying on that route overtook the express bus. Passengers pay higher fare to travel by express bus for speedy and convenient journey. But in this case, both purposes were defeated. Corporation should look into this sorry state of affairs and take remedial action. Travelling public should not be inconvenienced. R. Jambunathan, Tiruthuraipoondi. Summer rushThe miserable failure of Southern Railway in handling the rush during summer vacation shows the mismanagement of Railways. Albeit, the Railways had run many special trains to clear the rush, it could not meet the demand of the travelling public. Poor planning and shortage of coaches turned the situation from bad to worst. The public was the victim. Passengers had to undergo untold hardship thanks to the late running of special trains. Mere remodelling and beautification of the station building would not entice passengers. G. D. Inian, Mayiladuturai Train serviceNo reservation is possible after August 1, 2008 in the Mayiladuturai-Mysore Express train. The railway authorities have not decided whether this train should run to Nagore or continue to go to Mayiladuturai, as now. Politicians of both Mayiladuturai and Nagore are demanding that the train should start and terminate in their towns. A possible solution would be to extend the train to Nagore via Mayiladuturai. Thambras Krishnamurthy, Kumbakonam IIIt is appalling to note that the Southern Railway has planned to shift the starting point of Mysore Express from Mayiladuturai to Tiruvarur. Though Mayiladuturai is represented by a Union Minister, the constituency is continuously neglected. Instead of shifting the starting point to Tiruvarur, the Railways could start a part of the Mysore Express from Mayiladuturai and another part from Tiruvarur. Both could be merged at Thanjavur leave for Mysore as a single train. Deepa, Mayiladuturai. IIIThe Nagore-Mysore Express operated on the MG section was suspended after the BG conversion works commenced in the Tiruchi-Thanjavur-Tiruvarur-Nagore sector. After the completion of the BG conversion works between Tiruchi and Thanjavur, the train was operated from Thanjavur Junction. Meanwhile the Railways, for reasons not known, extended the train to Kumbakonam and later to Mayiladuturai. The train was introduced for the benefit of the large number of devotees visiting Velankanni, Tirunallar, Nagore, etc., from Karnataka. The Railways should now operate this train from Nagore to Mysore. Ehsanullah, Nagore. Disproportionate assetsAt the conference of Chief Minister and Chief Justices at Delhi, our Prime Minister has observed that “apart from pendency and delayed justice, corruption is another challenge, we face both in government and the Judiciary” (The Hindu, dated 20-4-08). Chief Justice of India has observed that “at the time of appointment, every supreme court and the High Court Judges have to declare their assets, to the CJI and the respective CJs of the High Courts” and thereafter, if any property is purchased, they have to give the information to the respective CJs. As such, instead of blaming each other, they should refer the disproportionate assets and other corruption cases to the respective enquiry officers V&AC/CBI/IT departments depending upon the severity of the charges and prove their innocence or otherwise, to the public. R.S. Moorthy, Karur Remove encroachmentsThere are too many encroachments at Palakkarai by vegetable vendors and shop owners. This is an important junction for all buses including those bound for Chennai. If it is so congested, how can there be free movement of buses? Therefore, I request the authorities to keep the area clean and spacious. The judgement given by Madurai Bench High Court may be enforced by the Municipal and Revenue authorities immediately. K. Santhanam, Kumbakonam
